Many parents want their children to learn and use a language other than the dominant language around them, but everyday life gets in the way. As the surrounding language becomes stronger, children start replying in it (for example they start replying in English in the UK), and parents slowly switch without meaning to.

Inspiroj helps families turn good intentions into a simple home language system: clear roles, small routines, realistic expectations, and a plan that can survive normal family life. Based on established research, and my own experience successfully juggling four languages in my family.

Why I can help

I was raised as a bilingual child, with my Italian father and my Spanish mother, often in countries where neither Italian nor Spanish was the dominant language outside the home. Portuguese came through my children’s mother. When my kids were born, we chose to raise them with three languages: Portuguese with her, Italian with me, and Spanish as the community language, since we lived in Madrid.

When our children were 5 and 7, my work as a scientific researcher took us to the UK. Our children learnt English at native level while keeping Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese. Today, as teenagers, they keep using Italian with me, Portuguese with their mother, maintain good Spanish, and speak native-level English.

This did not happen by accident. It came from warmth, consistency, deliberate choices, and a system that adapted as family life changed. I first learned the value of family languages as a child, and later learned how to protect them as a father, through books, observation, and trial and error in my own family.

A meaningful present for a multilingual family

A Family Language Strategy Session can also be a great present to parents who want their children to grow up with more than one language, but would welcome a clearer and calmer plan.

The free first contact can be with the person who will receive the session, or with the person who books the session (as long as they know the family well enough to check whether the session would be useful).

How it works

1. Free first contact. Around 15 minutes to understand the situation and check whether the session is a good fit. If you are thinking of giving this session as a gift, this short first contact can be with the person booking it, as long as they know the family well enough.
2. Short intake form. You share the languages in your family, what is working, and what feels difficult.
3. Strategy session. We create a realistic family language plan together.
4. One-page plan. After the session, you receive a simple written plan you can start using immediately.

Every family is different

There is no single perfect formula for raising multilingual children. Some families need more structure, some need more confidence, and some need a gentler way to keep the family language alive without turning home life into a lesson.

I also welcome families where children have different communication styles, including autistic children. The focus is always practical: what helps this family use its languages with more warmth, joy, and inspiration?
